The Cowboys entered the season knowing they would need strong seasons from Justin James and Hunter Maldonado to make noise this season. What they didn’t know was that their frontcourt would be decimated by injuries 20 minutes into the season. With injuries come opportunities and 6’6″ freshman TJ Taylor was ready for his. As Maldonado (21 pts, 12 rebs) and James (23 pts) did what they were expected, the lefty from Virginia pitched in with an unexpected 21 points and 7 rebounds.
Perhaps the extra minutes that have opened up due to injury will be a blessing in disguise for a program that is trying to replace so many rotational pieces.
Niagara comes to Laramie at 1-1 on the season. After opening the season with a win over St. Bonaventure, the Purple Eagles came up short on the road at Loyola-Chicago. Niagara head coach Chris Casey is 52-111 in his six seasons with the team. The Purple Eagles are led by forward Melvin Prochet (17.5 ppg, 10.5 rpg) and 5’10 guard James Towns (18.5 ppg).
