The Colorado State Rams begin their first season under new head coach Niko Medved. Medved returns to Fort Collins to start his sixth year as a head coach; he was previously an assistant coach at CSU. The Rams will face the Colorado Christian Cougars in a campus site game for the Gulf Coast Showcase.

What’s new for the Rams this year is that they will have an actual offense. Under the previous regime there was no set offense and the Rams would have to create their own shot on offense.

Nico Carvacho is expected to be the main focus of the Rams offense this season, as last season’s leading scorer, Prentiss Nixon, transferred to Iowa State in the offseason.

The Rams will be without a key piece of their game this season. After the Rams scrimmage against CSU-Pueblo, coach Medved announced that Deion James would be redshirting this season to allow him to recover properly from offseason knee surgery. Coach Medved also announced that guard Kris Martin would miss the first five games of the season due to missing team expectations.

Two freshman are expected to make an immediate impact for this team. Kendle Moore and Adam Thistlewood are being thrown into the fire for this Rams team. But coach Medved thinks they can handle the added expectations.

“They’re talented kids, but I love their mentality,” Medved told Justin Michael of the Rams Report. “They don’t get too up, they don’t get too down, they just keep playing. They’re going to be a big part of what we’re doing this year.”

The Rams have a couple games to work out the kinks before they hit the Gulf Coast Showcase tournament. Expect to the see the Rams show up on both ends of the court and show that this team can run an offense.
