No. 7 Nevada vs. BYU Game Preview: High Expectations Begin For Wolf Pack
Season opener for the Wolf Pack will challenge them a bit.
The wait is almost over.
Nevada’s season tickets sold out months ago and with less than 300 single game tickets remaining for Tuesday, Lawlor Events Center is guaranteed to be rockin’.
BYU comes into the matchup No. 56 in kenpom.com’s preseason ratings behind veterans Yoeli Childs, TJ Haws, and Luke Worthington. The Cougars will be without PG Nick Emery who will miss the first nine games of the season due to an NCAA violation. Emery also sat out all of last year due to personal reasons.
Nevada is stacked to the roof with talent and comes in at preseason No.7 in the AP Poll. That amounts to the highest ranking in school history, as well as the highest preseason ranking in Mountain West Conference history. One of the most talented and veteran teams in the country, after Jordan Caroline, Caleb Martin, and Cody Martin, all returned after testing the NBA draft waters, among several incoming transfers and a five star Mcdonalds All-American.
The Wolf Pack are led by the reigning Mountain West player of the year, Sports Illustrated’s Mid-Major Preseason player of the year, and Associated Press’ Preseason 1st team All-American, Caleb Martin. His twin brother, Cody Martin, is the reigning Mountain West defensive player of the year and quietly having a tremendous career at Nevada.
The Wolf Pack will surely open the season to a sell-out crowd in what should be one of Nevada’s toughest home opponents this season. BYU happens to be a very disciplined and well-coached squad that will more than likely be a top three West Coast Conference team.
Jordan Caroline and five star McDonald’s All-American, Jordan Brown, were both injured in practice last week but are expected to play.
Will coach Eric Musselman‘s No.7 Nevada live up to the hype as a national contender? The nation will be up late and eagerly waiting to find out.
