Last weekend one of these programs got a monkey off their back and the other lost at home 7-6. It’s no mystery that Boise State and BYU enter this game in different spots as a program. A similarity between the two has been their inconsistent play. Both the Broncos and the Cougars have experienced highs and lows this season.
BYU went to Madison and knocked off the then-No. 6 ranked Wisconsin Badgers in Week 3 of the season. Boise State went to Troy for Week 1 and rolled over the Trojans in a Group of 5 showdown. The Cougars went on to lose back to back games to University of Washington and in-state rival Utah State by a combined score of 80-27. Boise State dropped games to Oklahoma State and San Diego State behind poor offensive line and special teams play.
Fast forward to November 3rd and their matchup against one another. BYU brings in a true freshman quarterback who was a long time verbal commit to the Broncos and a sputtering offense averaging only 326.4 yards per game. Boise State looks to build upon slow offensive line progress and a myriad of defensive injuries. The Cougars do however boast the nation’s 26th ranked defense allowing just 335 yards per game.
The one consistent historical factor in this matchup is that these games are often close, especially when those game are played at Albertsons Stadium. Two out of the last three games in Boise have been decided by a single point. Boise State owns the overall series lead 6-2 and comes into the game on a 2 game series win streak, after winning in Provo last year 24-7.
Let’s take a look on the keys to a Boise State Victory.
