Mountain West Championship Game To Air On ESPN
The championship game will be in primetime.
Channel and kick time are set.
The kick off time and TV network for the Mountain West championship game is finally known. The game will kick off at 7:45 p.m. ET and air on ESPN. This is the third year that the title game will air on ESPN.
The championship game is hosted by the divisional champion with the highest win percentage in conference-only games which is a change from the previous years ways to determine the host.
For a refresher here is the tie-breaking rules. It does go beyond this but these are the most likely scenarios after divisional record.
- Head-to-head result between the tied divisional champions.
- If still tied:
- If one team was ranked in the latest available CFP Selection Committee ranking and wins in the final weekend of the regular season, they will be declared the host. If in that same scenario, the team that was the highest-ranked team in the latest available CFP Selection Committee ranking loses in the final weekend of the regular season, a composite average of selected computer rankings will be used.
As for the time of the kick it is great it is not super late but it also could get dwarfed by conference title games for the ACC and Big Ten begin 15 minutes later.
Looking at ESPN’s schedule they start with the Sun Belt title game at noon Eastern but then have a pair of basketball games. The two basketball games are between preseason top 25 teams with No. 24 Purdue at No. 19 Michigan and Stanford at No. 1 Kansas.
There is a big gap in football as the AAC title game kicks at 3:30 p.m. ET and the SEC title game that begins at 4 p.m. ET and that is it for major college football.
Maybe it is being selfish but it would be nice for ESPN to air the Mountain West title game at 5:30 and swap the Kansas vs. Stanford game because then there would be less competition for the Mountain West title game that could feature a pair of ranked teams.
Even playing alongside a pair of Power 5 title games on broadcast television, this evening kick off is better than when the title game was on CBS and kicked at 10 p.m. ET.
