It took all camp for Craig Bohl and his staff to pick its starting quarterback, and the Wyoming Cowboys have named Tyler Vander Waal as the starter to open this season against New Mexico State.

The redshirt freshman beat out senior Nick Smith who started two games and played in a third last year when Josh Allen was sidelined with an injury. Smith was given the starting nod in spring but the competition was going to continue to fall as Smith was not overly impressive to securely claim the starting position.

Vander Wall is a former three-star recruit so he clearly has some talent and time will tell if he will help the Cowboys offense improve from last year to this year. The progression will not all be on Vander Wall as the offensive line and running game was new last year, so another year of experience should make this unit overall better than the 2017 squad.

Wyoming opens up its season this Saturday at 5 p.m. MT on ESPN2 at New Mexico State.
