In 2017 Rashaad Penny achieved several unprecedented accolades for SDSU, the Mountain West- and NCAA football.

Rashaad Penny is a special athlete- and he’s just getting started.

As the first athlete in Mountain West Conference history to be named both Offensive Player of the Year and Special Teams Player of the Year in the same season, Rashaad wrapped the 2017 campaign leading the NCAA in rushing yards (2,248) and all-purpose yards (2,974).  He also tied the all-time NCAA record for FBS kickoff returns for touchdown.

During 2017, Penny was second in the nation rushing touchdowns (23), total touchdowns (28), and points (168). He also managed 19 catches for 135 yards and two touchdowns, along with 17 kickoff returns for 521 yards and two touchdowns. He had two punt returns, one for a 70-yard touchdown.

Rashaad placed fifth in Heisman Trophy voting, was a finalist for the Walter Camp and Maxwell Awards– and a Doak Walker semifinalist while earning consensus first-team All-American honors.

On Wednesday, Penny was named 2017-18 Mountain West Male Athlete of the Year by the conference, becoming the second Aztec to be honored. Aztecs track and field star Shanieka Thomas was the 2012-13 Mountain West Female Athlete of the Year.

Also earning 2017-18 Female Athlete of the Year for the Mountain West was track and field standout Allie Ostrander of Boise State.

Penny graduated from SDSU and was a first-round draft pick (26th overall) of the Seattle Seahawks. He was the ninth first-round pick in SDSU history and the first since Kyle Turley in 1998.

The Mountain West Conference has given out the Athlete of the Year award annually since 2010, recognizing not only outstanding athletic achievement but also good academic standing, and good character on and off the field.

The Aztec Nation congratulates Rashaad Penny for his outstanding achievements and his ongoing commitment to excellence.
