Coach Brian Dutcher Hires San Jose State Assistant Jay Morris
Aztecs add Jay Morris as an assistant coach
San Diego State staff complete with the addition of Jay Morris.
On April 18thcoach Tim Shelton left the San Diego State program to join former assistant Justin Hutson at Fresno State. That would lead to the second opening on the San Diego State staff. Long Beach State assistant Rod Palmer filled the first opening. Today San Diego State coach Brian Dutcher filled the final empty spot on the staff with San Jose State assistant coach Jay Morris.
Morris’s name may seem familiar and it should because he was hired as director of player development for the Aztecs. He was only on the staff for a short while when he was offered the job as an assistant coach at San Jose State.
“We are excited to have Jay join the Aztec basketball family for a second time,” Dutcher said. “We hired him before last season as our director of player development, but he later had an offer to become an assistant coach at San Jose State and we encouraged him to accept that position. With us having an opening on our staff, I knew Jay was the right guy for the job.”
Morris started his college coaching career at Long Beach State in 2008 as director of basketball operations. From there he went on to become an assistant coach for five seasons at Cal State Northridge. At Northridge, he helped the Matadors bring in a number of talented transfers into the program.
After the stint with the Matadors, Morris went on to spend the 2015-2016 season with Nevada as an assistant. There he was part of the staff that led the Wolfpack to the 2016 CBI title. In 2016 Morris headed home by returning to Long Beach State as director of player development where he worked with current San Diego State coach Rod Palmer.
Morris will now be able to go recruiting starting this Wednesday for the second July evaluation weekend
