Nevada Advances To The Semi-Finals Of The Mountain West Tournament With Victory Over UNLV

Despite an off day from the Martin twins and a furious challenge from UNLV, the Nevada Wolf Pack were able to outlast the Rebels with a 79-74 victory in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West tournament on this Thursday afternoon.

The Wolf Pack got a big day from Jordan Caroline this afternoon as the junior guard scored 21 points, grabbed ten rebounds and dished out four assists as he was the difference in propelling the Wolf Pack into the semi-finals of the Mountain West tournament.

The Rebels, coming off an overtime victory over Air Force yesterday 97-90 in the first round of the Mountain West tournament, put up a fight against a Wolf Pack team that embarrassed the Rebels in Las Vegas on March 1st by a score of 101-75. The Rebels went into the locker room after the first half up 39-31 on Nevada and playing some very good basketball early on.

In the second half, the Wolf Pack went on a 22-6 run in the first six minutes of the second half to take the lead that they did not relinquish. The Rebels did get the lead down to 77-70 late in the game when after Nevada’s Hallice Cooke was assessed with a technical foul, UNLV’s Jordan Johnson went one for two from the free throw line to cut the Nevada lead to 77-71 and after a Josh Hall foul, UNLV’s Kris Clyburn went one for two from the free throw line to cut the Wolf Pack lead to 77-72. After a Caleb Martin missed a free throw attempt, Skakur Juiston converted a layup to cut the Wolf Pack lead to 77-74.

After Caleb Martin missed another free throw attempt, the Rebels had a chance to tie the game in regulation with under 30 seconds left, but Jovan Mooring missed wide on a bad three-point attempt that Josh Hall rebounded and Hall’s made free throws sealed the win for the Wolf Pack.

For the Wolf Pack Kendall Stephens chipped in with 15 points and five rebounds while Caleb Martin only scored 12 points off 5 for 16 shooting, Cody Martin struggled today as he only scored seven points but did dish out six assists in the winning effort.

For the Rebels, Juiston was the Rebels leading scorer as he scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while Brandon McCoy chipped in with 12 points and 14 rebounds and Jovon Mooring scored 14 points and dished out five assists. Kris Clyburn played very well off the bench for the Rebels as he scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds as he helped the Rebels be competitive in this contest against the Wolf Pack.

Nevada will now advance to the semi-finals of the Mountain West tournament for the third straight year as they await the winner of the Fresno State/San Diego State match-up.
