The Utah State Aggies beat the Colorado State Rams 76-65 in the first round of the Mountain West tournament. The Rams had a 15 point lead just over halfway through the first half. Utah State fought back and was only down by two at the half. In the second half the Aggies just outworked the Rams.
They were great in transition and they were able to keep the Rams from really getting back into the game. The Rams did get the Aggies lead down to three points at one point, but Utah State shut the comeback door down quickly and got their lead back and held onto it.
The Aggies were lead by Koby McEwen who had 25 points. He was joined in double figures by Dwayne Brown Jr (15), Julion Pearre (14), and Sam Merrill (11). The Aggies were having a bad shooting night to begin the game, but they recovered nicely. Utah State ended the game shooting 50%. They also outworked the Rams on the boards, which is usually CSU’s forte. The Aggies out-rebounded the Rams by nine.
The Rams were lead by Anthony Bonner who finished the game with 15 points. He was joined in double figures by Prentiss Nixon (14) and Che Bob (12). Nico Carvacho and Deion James both had good nights on the boards as they both finished with 10 rebounds. The Rams started the game with hot shooting but they reverted to their chuck it up style of shooting and couldn’t buy a bucket as they finished the game shooting 39%.
Utah State now looks to tomorrow as they prepare to play Boise State tomorrow. The game is scheduled to tip at 6pm PT and can be seen on CBS Sports Network. Colorado State now turns to looking for a new head coach.
