Why Utah State Will Win
A 16-point night from backup guard DeAngelo Isby was about all that went right for the Aggies Wednesday night in Laramie. Before this week’s loss to the Cowboys, Utah State’s depleted roster had managed a nifty 3-win stretch against Air Force, Fresno and New Mexico to stay afloat in the conference standings. The hope in Aggieland is a return to form tonight at home against a Broncos team with an eye on the MW title.
Daunting as this matchup appears, USU tends to play Boise tough no matter the occasion — all but one of the teams’ nine conference games against one another have been decided by six points or less. The Aggies just missed a chance to stun the Broncos on the road earlier this season, shooting 50 percent from the floor and out-rebounding the best rebounding team in the conference only to fall four points short by the final buzzer. It’ll be close, but if the Aggies win the battle of the boards and if Sam Merrill can revisit the same zone he reached back in Boise (9-of-12, 5-6 from deep) Utah State could pull off a stunner.
Why Boise State Will Win
Put simply, because it’s all Boise State knows how to do. The Broncos took New Mexico’s best shot Tuesday trailing by as many as 13 in Albuquerque, and still Hutchison and Co. proved victorious. Unseating the first-place Broncos appears to require a series of cosmic events, as the only two blips on Boise’s otherwise spotless conference record came at Nevada and in a 79-78 OT thriller in Laramie.
Hutchison is averaging a league-leading 19.9 ppg and building a resume worthy of MW player of the year consideration, most recently dropping 23 on the Lobos and sealing BSU’s latest win with a late go-ahead layup. The senior also ranks sixth in the conference in both assists and steals per game.
Though USU’s Sam Merrill may throw the Hutchison’s Broncos a few curves, it’s unlikely a BSU team cruising its way to the MW crown will take time out its day to entertain thoughts of losing to the Aggies.
