What are the strengths and weaknesses?

Former Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen decided to forgo his senior season to enter the 2018 NFL Draft. At the end of Wyoming’s 2016-17 season, rumors about Allen being a first-round pick began to pick up but he decided to stay for his 3rd season in the program. One of the most interesting aspects of this year’s draft is the number of varying opinions on each prospect. In what will easily be a quarterback-heavy first round, each of the top 5 prospects has some major red flags.

Strengths:

Anyone who has ever seen Josh Allen play instantly notices his arm talent and mobility. Allen can effortlessly throw the ball 60+ yards on a dime and elude sacks from players of all sizes with his strength and agility. In addition to his ability to evade defenders, he runs a 4.75 40 yard dash and at 6’5″ 240 lb., he is tough to deal with in the open field. Allen can make every throw on the field and will make throws that many at the next level wouldn’t even attempt.

Weaknesses:

Allen will need to increase his accuracy and pocket presence in his transition to the NFL. On just about every Josh Allen highlight out there, he is scrambling out of the pocket and either running or throwing a deep ball over the top of the defense. On some of those plays, he is quick to get out of the pocket for no reason at all or he has misread the defense and uses his strength and ability to get himself out of tough positions. There are also multiple lowlights of Allen missing receivers at short distances over the middle. If he is consistently missing receivers over the middle in the NFL, his turnover rate will skyrocket.

Allen’s strengths are truly remarkable. During his pro day at Wyoming, he was throwing to receivers that he had only spent a couple weeks with. When he started throwing deep during his last 10 throws, his receivers looked completely lost trying to track a ball thrown that far. His arm strength will cause serious problems for NFL defenses.

If he is able to compliment his deep ball with catchable, accurate short throws, he has the physical ability to become an all-time great. If he doesn’t shore up his pocket presence, he could put himself at a severe risk of injury and turnovers.
