What are the strengths and weaknesses for the talented former SDSU TE?
David Wells was a quarterback in high school until moving to tight end for his senior year, causing him to be overlooked by recruiters.
6’6″ and 256 lb. Wells is huge. During his career at San Diego State, he played 47 games and had 38 receptions for 449 receiving yards and 6 receiving touchdowns.
In his junior season, Wells capitalized, garnering second-team All-Mountain West honors as a solid receiver with enough speed to hammer defenses (25 catches, 294 yards, four touchdowns) and possessing the power and build to be a juggernaut in-line move blocker.
Wells’ production down ticked in 2017 with 9 catches, 133 yards and two touchdowns, but he made second-team all-conference again because of the lack of receiving opportunities coupled with his critical role as lead blocker helping to pave the way for the nation’s top rusher, Rashaad Penny.
David wells has great size and good speed. He is a solid pass catcher when called upon, and a good route runner. He is a solid pass blocker, a solid run blocker, and he consistently opens holes up for his backs.
Strengths:
Wells makes solid and consistent initial contact. He does a great job of engaging and keeping the block centered, and he’s highly reliable. He is tough as nails and he breaks tackles.
Wells has a patient and measured approach to second-level targets. He identifies secondary blocks and finds his man. He knows his role, and has consistently good hand placement.
He locks hips out as a blocker on the edge, and consistently opens holes for his backs. He does not get pushed around easily. He’s an all-around asset who does his job consistently well.
Weaknesses:
David Wells has good speed, but doesn’t possess “elite” tight end speed.
He is not known as a passing catching tight end (but maybe he should be).
Draft Prediction:
Round 6-7.
