Smith remains a key cog in one of the Mountain West’s toughest defenses.
Our list of Mountain West football’s 50 best players finally arrives at the first athlete to have made last year’s list, as well, with San Diego State cornerback Ron Smith checking in at #47.
Since assuming a starting role in the latter half of 2016, Smith has excelled. He finished tied for tenth nationally with 16 passes defended last fall and came away with two interceptions, too, but he also contributed 54 tackles, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble. No surprise, then, that the Aztecs secondary finished 14th nationally in Havoc Rate.
If Smith can turn a few more of the defensed passes into turnovers, the junior should easily establish his place among SDSU’s recent litany of upper-echelon defenders, though the Aztec faithful will certainly argue he’s already done so.
