The only thing left for Wingard to achieve? A conference title.
It’s a rare thing when a college football player steps onto the field as a freshman and makes a dramatic impact for the next four years, but Wyoming certainly unearthed one of the Mountain West’s best defenders ever in safety Andrew Wingard, the top athlete at his position for the second year in a row and #4 on this year’s countdown of the conference’s best.
Wingard is the only player in this year’s Mountain West to have been named twice to the all-conference first team. He racked up 114 tackles, eight tackles for loss, five interceptions and two recovered fumbles for a Cowboys defense that finished 14th nationally in opponents’ passer rating and first in takeaways.
He could leave Laramie as the program’s all-time leading tackler and finish among the best ever in TFLs and INTs. Even better, and with a little luck, Wingard could help bring home Wyoming’s first conference title in 25 years.
