Could the Mountain West have the nation’s best defender?

The Mountain West has a good number of defensive players in the league with five of them being named to the Bednarik Award watch list which is given out to the nation’s best defenders.
- Andrew Wingard, S, Wyoming
- Carl Granderson, DE, Wyoming
- Tyler Horton, DB, Boise State
- Malik Reed, LB, Nevada
- Jefreey Allison, LB, Fresno State

All five of these will be a first-team all-Mountain West player and have a legit shot at being player of the year for the conference. As with most awards, they go to players who are good but also play on some really good teams. That could eliminate Reed, Wingard, and Granderson since Wyoming and Nevada are not expected to have amazing years. Whereas Allison and Horton are on contenders within the league for Fresno State and Boise State.
Odds are a Mountain West player will not win the award unless they have an amazing season that blows out every other player statistically, and their team wins at least nine games.
