The Mountain West has failed to have a team ranked in the top 25 since 2015

Sooner or later, the Mountain West will be back among the nation’s elite.

The MWC has endured a lengthy run without a team ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 rankings, but that streak should come to an end sometime next month.

Nevada (6-0) received 61 votes in Monday’s AP poll, the second-most among teams in the receiving votes category. Only Seton Hall (87) had more votes. The defending Mountain West champions have won 15 of its last 16 games dating back to last season. Nevada will likely face two top 25 teams in #22 Texas Tech and #23 TCU in early December, assuming both Big 12 teams remain ranked.

UNLV (6-0) has also surprised in the season’s early going, picking up two votes in Monday’s poll. The Rebels were picked in the middle of the pack of the league at the Mountain West media day, but Marvin Menzies has his team playing exciting basketball in Vegas. UNLV has two challenging matchups this week at Northern Iowa in the MWC/MVC Challenge and a home contest with Arizona, a team that ranked #2 in the preseason poll but has dropped out of the top 25 after a three-loss Battle 4 Atlantis showing.

The Mountain West will have to wait another week for a ranked team, but waiting is far from abnormal at this point. On Sunday, it will be 1,000 days since the Mountain West has had a team ranked in the AP poll. Boise State was ranked #25 in the final regular season poll of the 2014-15 season.

Keep an eye on the AP polls in the coming weeks, because you might see a familiar MWC squad or two on the list.
