Everything you need to know about the Wooden Legacy

San Diego State is one of eight teams participating in the Wooden Legacy Tournament in Fullerton, California, and begins play on Thanksgiving day and goes through Sunday Nov. 26.

The teams involved this year include some decent competition.

  • Saint Mary’s Gaels (WCC) KenPom: 26
  • Harvard Crimson (Ivy) KenPom: 129
  • Saint Joseph’s Hawks (Atlantic 10) KenPom: 64
  • Washington State Cougars (Pac-12) KenPom: 218
  • Georgia Bulldogs (SEC) KenPom: 69
  • Cal State Fullerton Titans (Big West) KenPom: 271
  • San Diego State Aztecs (Mountain West) KenPom: 70
  • Sacramento State Hornets (Big Sky) KenPom: 296

Clearly, the Aztecs would love nothing more than to get a matchup with the better teams in this tournament to boost a potential NCAA at-large bid, if needed.

The Aztecs matchup first with the lowest rated team in the bracket in Sacramento State. The Hornets have already just one win and it was against Division II member Notre Dame de Namur, and they also have played Colorado State and lost 72-61 to open its season.

If the bracket goes according to plan then the Aztecs would face off against top-70 KenPom team in Georgia since the Bulldogs play against host Cal State Fullerton.

Winning its opener is crucial for the Aztecs because a loss, even thought very unlikely, would pit San Diego State against three sub-200 KenPom teams, even if it wins both games after an opening round loss.

A win over Sacramento State should then give the opposite effect and allow the Aztecs to likely play three teams in the top-70, assuming favorites win. This would give San Diego State more chances to boost that at-large profile.

Best cast scenario is obviously winning it all which would get the Aztecs wins potentially over a Power Five team in Georgia and then a top-20 St. Mary’s team in the finals. Even getting to play St. Joseph’s in the finals would still be a pretty good opponent for the Aztecs.
