Preview: Three Keys for San Diego State to hand San Jose State a loss
San Diego State looks to keep San Jose State in the loss column.
San Diego State leads the series against San Jose State 15-5-1.
San Diego State closes out their away part of the season at San Jose State, who is still searching for their first win against an FBS team. All the best to San Jose State, but this is a tall ask for the Spartans as they own the largest negative point differential in the Mountain West, only scoring 59 points and allowing 166 points in four conference games.
For San Diego State, San Jose State is the landfill of the Mountain West Conference. The absolute bottom.
San Diego State has had success against San Jose State which dates back to the WAC and they are currently 24-point favorites. San Diego State is definitely licking their chops after embarrassing Hawaii in Honolulu. For the team from San Diego, it’s going to take the following three keys to continue their winning ways.
This is odd. Going into Mountain West play San Diego State was greedy for turnovers but, since playing UNLV on October 7, they’ve been -4 in turnovers. They almost had an interception last week, but it was overturned. Almost doesn’t count. If San Diego State can make things happen on defense, they can seal a win early.
Keep Rashaad Penny Motivated
Rocky Long made sure to include Rashaad Penny in the victory against Hawaii. He rushed for a career-high 253 yards and added two touchdowns on 30 attempts. Penny’s swagger is back, but San Jose State can throw a wrench in San Diego State’s plans just like Fresno State did weeks ago. The San Jose State defense will focus on him and do their best to copy the blueprint set up by Boise State, but the young Aztec offensive line is starting to gel together.
Stay Focused in San Jose, Not Elsewhere
In the standings, the Aztecs still trail Fresno State by two games. Fresno State controls their destiny to the Mountain West championship game, but the Aztecs can’t afford to watch the scoreboard. San Diego State enters a bye week after Saturday’s game and there’s a lot of football to be played against the Spartans. Their mind has to stay in San Jose, not in Fresno.
San Diego State plays tough and continues the momentum from Hawaii. Penny runs like crazy on San Jose State for 150+ yards and Juwan Washington puts up 100 yards. The defense comes back to form and forces three turnovers and ends the day +2 in turnovers. San Jose State will score one touchdown in the first half and it’s the only score they’ll see on Saturday.
