San Diego State goes to Texas to fight Army.
San Diego State (10-2) almost missed out on a postseason appearance with the quirkiness of the 80 teams bowl-eligible for 78 bowl slots. Shutting down the Poinsettia Bowl allowed the chaos to happen. San Diego State was one of the last 6 teams announced.

Independent Army (8-3) had a tie-in into the Armed Forces Bowl for 2017, and Army clinched that appearance after defeating Air Force back on November 4. Conference USA had the other primary tie-in, but Conference USA only had four teams bowl eligible. In 2019, the Mountain West will have a contracted tie-in to this bowl game.
