Wyoming Wins Their Conference Home Opener
Cowboys use a big second half to defeat San Diego State
Hayden Dalton has a career game to lead the Cowboys over San Diego State
The Wyoming Cowboys won their conference home opener 82-69 over the visiting Aztecs. Forward Hayden Dalton led the way with a career high 36 points and 15 rebounds as the Cowboys used a big second half to pull away from the gassed Aztecs. Cody Kelley was the only other Cowboy in double figures, finishing with 14 points.
In the first half San Diego State held the Wyoming offense at bay, holding the Cowboys to 36.7% shooting and 37 points. The Aztecs also were in control of the glass, leading the rebound battle 27-17. While the Aztecs seemed to be running their game plan to perfection, Wyoming found itself down only 40-37 after 20 minutes.
In the second half the Cowboys got hot and the Aztecs got sloppy. Wyoming shot 55.2% from the field (58.3% from three) and forced nine Aztec turnovers as they pulled away from the visitors. The altitude as well as the demoralizing shooting by the Cowboys may have contributed to San Diego State faltering in the second half as the Aztec players had their hands on their hips and found themselves lost during defense.
Malik Pope who finished with 21 points and nine rebounds to lead San Diego State. Devin Watson ended the game with 13 points and freshman Matt Mitchell had 11 points.
Wyoming has this weekend off and then heads to Nevada with a matchup with the Wolfpack next Wednesday. San Diego State has their conference home opener on Saturday against Utah State.
